Cargo

Want the short version? We keep a curated shortlist for this category.
Best cargo e-bikes →A cargo e-bike is the one category that can genuinely delete a car trip. The format matters more than the spec sheet: a longtail, a front-loader, a compact utility bike and a trike solve different problems, and buying the wrong shape is a more expensive mistake than buying the wrong motor.
Below: the cargo bikes we have tested and scored, then the rest of the market. We list the untested machines from the makers' own published figures so this page is a complete map of what you can actually buy — but we have not ridden them, so they carry no score and no verdict from us.

The four shapes of cargo bike
Format decides more about how a cargo bike fits your life than any number on the spec sheet. Pick the shape first.
Longtail
A standard front end with the rear triangle stretched a foot or more, putting the load — kids, panniers, or both — behind the rider over an extended rack.
Best for Two kids and a grocery run, by far the most common family setup.
Trade-off Long enough to be awkward in a lift or a narrow hallway, and the load sits behind you where you can't see it.
Front-loader (bakfiets)
A box or flat deck between the rider and the front wheel, steered through a linkage rod rather than a direct headset.
Best for Carrying passengers you want to see and talk to, and bulky loads that won't sit on a rack.
Trade-off The steering feels alien for the first few miles, and these are the longest and most expensive bikes in the category.
Compact utility
A normal-length frame on small (20") wheels with a reinforced rack and frame rated well above a regular bike's.
Best for One kid or a heavy shop, in a flat or a city where storage is the binding constraint.
Trade-off Less capacity than a true longtail, and small wheels are busier over broken pavement.
Cargo trike
Three wheels with a basket or box, so the bike stands up on its own when loaded and stopped.
Best for Riders who want zero balance demand at a standstill, and loads you'd rather not hold upright.
Trade-off Trikes don't lean, so corners have to be taken slowly, and they're wide for bike lanes and doorways.

Riese & Müller has withdrawn from the US market
Riese & Müller no longer sells new bikes into the United States, so the Load 75 Touring and Load4 75 Touring are out of the grid above. We keep both pages for existing owners and used buyers — the specifications still stand — but neither is a current buy in the US, and the prices on them are the last US MSRP rather than a live one.
Cargo trailers from Burley
Need more hauling room than the rack? A trailer adds it without changing bikes.
