Speed-rated certification (NTA-8776)
A Class 3 e-bike travels up to 28 mph — the impact energy is more than double a standard bicycle crash. Most bike helmets are only tested to CPSC's ~14 mph bicycle standard. The Dutch NTA-8776 speed-pedelec standard tests higher speeds and covers the temple and back of the head, where most e-bike impacts land. If you ride Class 3, insist on it.
Rotational protection (MIPS or equivalent)
Most real-world crashes are angled, not head-on. MIPS (and equivalents like Koroyd, WaveCel, or Bontrager's system) let the shell rotate slightly against the head to shed rotational force — the kind that causes concussions. Virginia Tech's independent 5-star lab ratings are the only US data that actually predicts concussion risk; check them before you buy.
Fit beats brand, every time
A perfectly fitting $80 helmet outperforms a poorly fitting $300 one. It should sit level, one to two finger-widths above the eyebrows, with the strap forming a snug V under each ear. If it rocks or slides, it's the wrong size or shape for your head.

For Class 3 e-bikes (up to 28 mph), a standard bike helmet is not tested for the impact energy involved — you want an NTA-8776 speed-pedelec-rated helmet that covers the temple and back of the head.
What does NTA-8776 mean?
NTA-8776 is a European standard created specifically for speed-pedelecs (fast e-bikes). It tests helmets at higher impact speeds than the bicycle standard and requires extended coverage. It's the closest thing to a purpose-built e-bike helmet certification available today.
How do I know a helmet fits correctly?
It should sit level on your head, one to two finger-widths above your eyebrows, and not rock front-to-back or side-to-side. The side straps should form a snug V just under each ear, and the buckled chin strap should allow no more than one or two fingers of space. If it slides when you shake your head, it's too big.
When should I replace my helmet?
Replace any helmet immediately after a hard impact, even if it looks fine — the protective foam is designed to crush once and does not recover. Otherwise, replace it roughly every five years, or sooner if the shell, foam, or straps show wear.
