Look for at least 800 lumens for unlit roads, 400+ for city riding, and a beam pattern shaped for cycling (cutoff at the top so you don't blind oncoming drivers). German StVZO-approved lights have this beam pattern by law; American lights vary wildly.

USB-C recharging, lockable mounts, and side-visibility cutouts are now standard at every price point. Skip anything that runs on disposable batteries.
