Buy UL-certified — the system and the pack
Look for UL 2849 (certifies the whole e-bike electrical system) and UL 2271 (certifies the battery pack). New York City's Local Law 39 now bars the sale of any uncertified e-bike or battery in the five boroughs. Certification is the single strongest predictor of whether a pack will fail safely.
Never buy counterfeit or unbranded aftermarket packs
The overwhelming majority of catastrophic e-bike fires trace back to counterfeit, unbranded, or mismatched replacement batteries sold on marketplaces. A $300 aftermarket pack that fails UL 2271 can burn down a home. If a deal looks too cheap, it is the deal that starts the fire.
Charge smart
Use only the charger that shipped with your bike. Don't charge overnight, on soft surfaces, or blocking an exit. Charge in an open, non-combustible area away from bedrooms and doorways. Unplug at full charge — trickle-charging a damaged cell is a common ignition path.
Watch for warning signs
Stop using a battery immediately if it swells, leaks, smells odd, gets unusually hot, or was dropped or crashed. A damaged lithium cell can enter thermal runaway hours later. Store and dispose of suspect packs outdoors, away from anything flammable, and contact your local hazardous-waste program.

Check whether your bike or battery has been recalled.
CPSC recalls are widely under-enforced in the e-bike category — brands routinely fail to reach most affected owners. If a fire just happened
Six steps in the first hours that protect your safety — and your claim.
Order matters. Get safe first; preserve evidence second. Much of what determines whether you can hold a manufacturer or marketplace accountable is decided before you ever speak to a lawyer.

Get out and call 911. Lithium fires spread fast, release toxic gas, and can reignite for hours — evacuate first, do not try to fight a spreading pack fire yourself.

Do not go back inside. Reignition is common. Let the fire service confirm the scene is safe.

Get medical attention, even for minor symptoms — smoke inhalation and burns can be worse than they first appear.

Preserve everything. Do not throw away the bike, battery, charger, or packaging. Photograph the scene, the serial numbers, the listing you bought from, and any injuries.

Report it. File with CPSC at SaferProducts.gov and notify your local fire marshal. If it was an aftermarket pack or charger, report to UL as well.

Talk to counsel before you talk to the seller's or marketplace's insurer. Anything you say is recorded and used to lower the value of your claim.

Why do e-bike batteries catch fire?
E-bike packs use lithium-ion cells that store a lot of energy. If a cell is damaged, poorly manufactured, overcharged, or exposed to heat, it can enter 'thermal runaway' — a self-sustaining reaction that releases intense heat and flammable gas. Counterfeit and low-quality packs are far more likely to fail this way.
What certification should an e-bike battery have?
Look for UL 2849 (the full e-bike electrical system) and UL 2271 (the battery pack itself). These standards test for the failure modes that cause fires. Some cities, including New York, now legally require certified batteries for sale.
Is it safe to charge my e-bike battery overnight?
It's safer not to. Charge while you're awake and present, in an open area away from exits and flammable materials, using only the manufacturer's charger, and unplug once it's full. Overnight and unattended charging is a common factor in serious fires.
What do I do if my e-bike battery is swollen or damaged?
Stop using it immediately. A swollen, leaking, overheating, or crash-damaged pack can ignite without warning. Move it outdoors away from anything flammable if you can do so safely, and contact your local hazardous-waste program for disposal — never put it in household trash or recycling.
