A new category

Auto cycles: not a bike, not a car.

Auto cycles are three-wheeled electric vehicles with enclosed cabins, seatbelts, real range, and freeway-capable speed — somewhere between a motorcycle and a compact car. The category runs from the ~$15k MiZN Trifecta UCV™ to the ~$40k solar-powered Aptera. Same three wheels, entirely different customers.

Two ends of one category

~$15k vs ~$40k — same three wheels, different worlds

It's tempting to lump every three-wheeled EV together, but the MiZN and the Aptera answer completely different questions. The MiZN is a budget-minded, all-weather urban commuter you reserve to replace a car for the daily grind. The Aptera is an efficiency moonshot for range and solar die-hards — closer in price and ambition to an electric car. Here's how they line up.

The commuter

MiZN Trifecta UCV™

≈ $15,000

An enclosed, all-electric three-wheel urban commuter vehicle — car-like weather protection and safety, on a motorcycle-trike footprint.

Who it's for: Drivers who want car-like safety and weather protection — and a real commute alternative — without a car-sized price tag or sticker shock at the gas pump.

The efficiency moonshot

Aptera Solar EV

≈ $40,000

A radically aerodynamic, three-wheeled solar electric vehicle that can add dozens of free miles a day from the sun — a different animal, and a different price class, from a commuter auto cycle.

Who it's for: Range and solar die-hards who want to drive for days on sunlight and rarely plug in — cross-shopping electric cars, not e-bikes.

Designed, manufactured & assembled in Santa Clara, California

The MiZN Trifecta UCV™ (Urban Commuter Vehicle), built by Mizer Motor Works Inc. (MMW), is not a pedal e-bike — it's a compact, fully enclosed, all-electric three-wheel autocycle built for the daily urban commute. It's aimed at drivers who want car-like safety and weather protection — and a genuine commute alternative — without a car-sized price tag or sticker shock at the gas pump. The enclosed cabin shields you from rain, wind, and cold the way a car does, while the narrow three-wheel footprint keeps it nimble in traffic and easy to park.

MMW positions it as the answer to the two biggest knocks against electric two- and three-wheelers: weather exposure and range anxiety. The cabin handles the first; an optional 72V 308Ah solid-state lithium-ion pack rated at up to a 250-mile range handles the second. A direct-drive DC motor (7.5 kW standard, up to 15 kW optional) takes it to highway speeds of up to 65 mph with a twist of the throttle. MMW estimates operating costs as low as roughly five cents per mile.

It's offered in three editions — Standard, Premiere, and Executive — spanning $13,995 to $17,995. The Premiere and Executive trims add MMW's custom climate-control system (heat and A/C), and the company is currently taking reservations through a Founders Program with a refundable $1,000 deposit.

Why it stands out

  • Fully enclosed cabin — true all-weather commuting without the bulk or cost of a car
  • Often drivable on a standard Class C car license — no motorcycle endorsement in many states (varies)
  • Operating costs as low as ~5¢ per mile (MMW estimate)
  • Up to 250 miles of range on the optional solid-state battery
  • Highway-capable: up to 65 mph from a direct-drive DC motor
  • 3-point seatbelt system standard, with an optional front & side airbag system
  • Designed, built, and assembled in Santa Clara, California
  • Optional heat & A/C climate control on Premiere and Executive editions

Safety & licensing notes

The Trifecta UCV™ is built around an automotive-style 3-point seatbelt system, and MMW offers an optional front and side airbag system — an unusual feature for an enclosed motorcycle-class trike. MMW states all components and finished vehicles are tested in-house before delivery.

Because it reaches highway speeds (up to 65 mph), the Trifecta falls outside the e-bike classes (1–3) entirely. MMW classifies it as an autocycle/motorcycle: in many states a standard Class C automobile license is sufficient — no separate motorcycle endorsement — and because the cabin is fully enclosed with three-point seatbelts, occupants are typically not subject to motorcycle-helmet laws. Classification, licensing, registration, and insurance rules still vary by state, so confirm the requirements with your state DMV before ordering — see our Laws and Safety sections.

This is a newer vehicle currently in its reservation/Founders phase. As of this writing we're not aware of any recalls or safety-action notices against it; we'll update this listing if that changes.

Designed & engineered in San Diego, California

The Aptera isn't a trike in the bicycle sense — it's a two-seat, three-wheeled solar electric vehicle (SEV) built around a single obsession: efficiency. Its teardrop body and roughly 0.13 drag coefficient make it one of the most aerodynamic passenger vehicles ever designed, which is how it stretches so many miles out of every kilowatt-hour.

Integrated solar cells can add a meaningful number of free miles per day in sunny climates — Aptera quotes up to around 40 miles a day from the sun alone — so many short-trip drivers may rarely need to plug in. Battery options are offered across a wide range, from roughly 250 miles up to a headline ~1,000-mile pack.

It's designed and engineered in San Diego, California. As of this writing Aptera is still pre-production and taking reservations rather than shipping in volume — an important distinction from vehicles you can buy and ride today. Treat the quoted specs, solar yield, and pricing as manufacturer targets and confirm the latest figures directly with Aptera before putting money down.

Why it stands out

  • Among the most aerodynamic passenger vehicles ever designed (~0.13 Cd)
  • Integrated solar can add up to ~40 free miles a day in good sun
  • Battery options spanning roughly 250 to 1,000 miles of range
  • Extremely efficient — about 10 miles per kWh
  • Classified as a three-wheeled autocycle, which changes the licensing picture vs a motorcycle-class vehicle
  • Designed and engineered in San Diego, California

Battery options

250-mile

≈ $26,000

Entry battery pack for short- and medium-range drivers leaning on daily solar.

400-mile (Launch Edition)

≈ $40,000

The widely-quoted launch configuration — the ~$40k figure that anchors the comparison below.

1,000-mile

$50,000+

Headline long-range pack for road-trippers who almost never want to charge.

Safety & licensing notes

Most U.S. states classify a three-wheeled vehicle like this as an 'autocycle,' which often means no motorcycle endorsement is required and occupants use standard seatbelts — but rules vary by state. Confirm licensing, registration, and helmet requirements with your state DMV before reserving. See our Laws and Safety sections.

Aptera is pre-production. Specs, range figures, solar yield, and pricing are manufacturer targets and have shifted over the program's life — verify the current numbers directly with Aptera before putting down a deposit.

As of this writing we're not aware of any recalls or safety-action notices. Because the vehicle is not yet in volume production, there is limited independent, real-world safety and reliability data — we'll update this listing as that emerges.

Disclosure — Mizer Motor Works Inc. (MMW), maker of the MiZN Trifecta UCV™, is an advertising partner, and links to their store are sponsored. The Aptera listing is purely editorial — we have no affiliate relationship with Aptera and earn nothing from it. A partnership buys placement here; it never buys a softer safety section or a quiet omission. Specs are sourced from each manufacturer and several (especially Aptera) are pre-production targets — always confirm current pricing, availability, and the licensing and registration rules in your state before you put money down.
