An e-bike is still a bicycle, and the laws of physics don't care how many watts it makes. Ride quality is how the bike feels underneath you — planted in a corner, calm at speed, comfortable over broken pavement, and predictable when you're tired. Crucially, when we test a bike hands-on we also ride it with the motor off, because a good e-bike has to be a good bike first. The day the battery dies, geometry is all you have left.

Geometry and weight: why heavy isn't the enemy
E-bikes are heavy — 45 to 80-plus pounds — but weight is less important than where it sits. A mid-drive with a low, central battery feels balanced and tucks into corners; a rear-hub bike with a rack-top battery rides tail-heavy and wanders. Wheelbase and head-angle set the personality: a long, slack bike (cargo, cruiser) is rock-steady but lazy to turn, while a shorter, steeper bike is lively but busier at speed. We note when a bike's mass is well-managed — Cannondale's lighter builds and the long, stable wheelbase of a good cargo bike are both 'right,' just for different riders.

Suspension and tires: the comfort that actually matters
Most riders over-value suspension forks and under-value tires. A cheap coil fork adds weight and dive without much benefit; meanwhile, a wide tire run at the right pressure is the most effective, lightest, and cheapest suspension on any e-bike. We pay close attention to tire volume and casing — a 2.4-inch Schwalbe Super Moto-X at sane pressure soaks up city chatter better than a budget fork ever will. Where suspension does earn its keep (e-MTBs, fat-tire trail bikes), we check that travel, damping, and the motor's speed are actually matched.

Handling at speed and when unpowered
A Class 3 bike does 28 mph, and at that speed the difference between confident and sketchy is enormous. In hands-on testing we push a bike to its top assisted speed on open road and judge stability, steering calm, and how composed it stays over expansion joints and mid-corner bumps; then we kill the assist and ride it as a regular bicycle — because at some point you will. A 70-pound bike with no usable gears below the motor's cutoff becomes a boat anchor; a well-geared one is merely a heavy bike you can still pedal home.
