We have watched too many cheap bikes turn into landfill because a proprietary controller died and nobody could source the part. So we weigh not just how a bike is made, but how easy it is to keep alive.

Component quality and water resistance
We start with the bones: frame welds and finish, the quality of the drivetrain and brakes, the connectors and cable routing, and the IP rating of the electronics. E-bikes live outdoors and ride through rain, so sealed, well-routed wiring and a properly gasketed battery interface separate a bike that lasts a decade from one that throws an error code the first wet winter. Belt-drive and internally-geared options (the Gazelle Ultimate's Enviolo-plus-belt setup) cost more up front but slash long-term maintenance — fewer parts to wear, nothing to rust, no derailleur to tune.

Proprietary vs. standard parts
This is the hidden risk that decides a bike's lifespan. A bike built on widely-available standards — Shimano or SRAM drivetrains, common brake pads, a mainstream Bosch or Bafang motor — can be serviced by almost any shop for years. A bike built on a proprietary, brand-only motor and controller is fine until that brand discontinues the part or goes out of business, at which point a dead component can total the whole bike. We flag proprietary lock-in explicitly, because it's invisible at purchase and devastating three years later.

Dealer network, warranty, and getting it fixed
Where you buy changes everything. A bike from a brand with real dealers (Trek, Specialized) means a shop will diagnose a motor fault and honor the warranty in person. A direct-to-consumer bike is usually cheaper and can be excellent, but you are the front-line mechanic, and support quality varies enormously — some brands ship parts overnight, others vanish. We weigh warranty length and what it actually covers (motor and battery terms matter most), parts availability, and how responsive support is when something goes wrong. A long frame warranty means little if you can't get a controller.
