UL Standards Releases Updated UL 2849 Revision 3.0 Covering Connected E-Bike Systems

UL Standards released the 3.0 revision of UL 2849 today, adding testing requirements for connected e-bike systems — specifically Bluetooth and cellular-connected platforms where the bike receives over-the-air firmware updates or pairs with a mobile-app companion.

Revision 3.0 requires manufacturers to demonstrate firmware-update integrity (cryptographic signature verification), secure boot, and a fail-safe degraded-mode behavior in the event of a corrupted or interrupted update. The standard also requires that any motor or BMS firmware update preserve all safety-critical limits defined in 2.0.

The new revision aligns UL 2849 with emerging EU and UK cyber-physical safety frameworks for connected mobility devices. Manufacturers with current 2.0 certification will have an 18-month grace period to recertify to 3.0.

Industry impact: most major brands that ship connected systems — Bosch, Specialized, Trek, Giant — have indicated they meet or exceed the new requirements already. Smaller DTC brands that ship 'smart' systems without rigorous firmware-update infrastructure will need to invest meaningfully to recertify.
