Tenways Rolls Out Digital Battery Passports Ahead of EU February 2027 Rule
E-bike brand Tenways and Minespider announced Oct. 7, 2026 that Tenways is implementing Digital Battery Passports for its light means of transport (LMT) batteries ahead of the EU Batteries Regulation deadline of Feb. 18, 2027, when LMT batteries placed on the EU market must carry a QR-linked electronic passport.

E-bike batteries are about to get a digital twin in the European Union. Brand TENWAYS said it is implementing Digital Battery Passports for its light means of transport (LMT) batteries with platform partner Minespider, ahead of a hard EU deadline in early 2027.
The companies' joint press release is dated October 7, 2026. Trade coverage from Cycling Industry News (Oct 7) and VeloDisco (Oct 8) reported the same rollout. This post explains what the rule requires, what Tenways says it is building, and what U.S. riders and shops should watch.
This is not a product review, and it is not legal advice.
What the EU rule requires
Under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 (the Batteries Regulation), Article 77 says that from 18 February 2027 each LMT battery placed on the market or put into service must have an electronic record — a battery passport. The regulation cites e-bikes and e-scooters as examples of light means of transport.
Per the regulation and the European Commission's Battery Passport FAQ (manuscript completed September 2026):
The passport holds model-level information and individual-battery information, including information from use.
It is accessed through a QR code linked to a unique identifier.
Consumers get access free of charge, under defined access rights.
The passport ceases to exist after the battery has been recycled.
Not every data field is mandatory on day one. Commission guidance says carbon footprint, recycled content and due diligence information are not required when passports start in February 2027; those obligations arrive on later schedules.
What Tenways and Minespider announced
According to the Minespider–TENWAYS press release:
The work covers Digital Battery Passports for TENWAYS' LMT batteries.
The goal is to put supplier engagement, data structures and digital infrastructure in place before the February 2027 deadline, rather than as a last-minute compliance scramble.
TENWAYS' European general manager Amir Fazeli framed the move as industry transparency for the products and batteries behind e-bike growth.
Minespider founder and CEO Nathan Williams described LMT batteries as part of the first wave of battery-passport requirements and said working with a real manufacturer turns the rules into a workable process.
TENWAYS is an Amsterdam-based e-bike company with city, hybrid, compact and cargo models sold across Europe. The passport announcement is about data readiness, not a U.S. recall or a UL certification change.
Why U.S. riders should care anyway
Imported EU bikes. If you buy a European brand (or a bike built for the EU market), passport QR codes and structured battery data are likely to show up on new stock after the rule bites.
Transparency trend. U.S. battery-safety debates already center on UL 2271 / UL 2849, CPSC's proposed micromobility battery rule, and state bills such as Michigan's HB 6339. Passports are a different tool — lifecycle data, not a fire test — but they push the same industry toward traceable packs.
Repair and second life. A passport that follows a battery can matter for warranty, service and eventual recycling conversations, even if U.S. law does not yet require the same QR system.
The e-bike pros' take
Ask for pack identity. Model, serial and certification marks (UL 2271 battery / UL 2849 system where claimed) still matter more for U.S. fire safety than a European QR code.
Watch the February 2027 date if you import, distribute or service EU-market e-bikes.
Don't confuse tools. A digital passport is not a substitute for certified electrical systems, correct chargers or local riding rules.
