The Apex Pro is a niche tool for the hunter and backcountry rider who needs to haul gear up terrain a hub motor can't touch — a 160 Nm Bafang Ultra mid-drive with tunable output. At $6,499 it only makes sense for that off-road mission. Anyone wanting a road-legal commuter, or long range from all that power, should skip it entirely; this is a specialist machine, not a general-purpose e-bike.
The 8.4 reflects a monster motor and burly build: 160 Nm climbs loaded trails nothing else here manages, and the VPO tuning, air fork and 4-piston hydraulics are genuine strengths on motor and brakes. But the brakes-and-safety criterion carries a hard caveat we won't gloss over — in its full-power VPO mode it runs 1000W nominal, above the 750W / Class 3 ceiling in most states, so at full power it is not road-legal as a bicycle and belongs off-road or on private property. Range is short when you use that power, and it's a premium price for a niche build.
The compromise is legality and range for backcountry capability. If you'll ride private land or trails and dial it to a compliant mode for public roads, that's the deal. If you want fat-tire toughness and long range that stays road-legal, the Himiway Zebra offers a UL-certified 960Wh pack for a quarter of the price — with a hub motor that can't come close to the Apex's loaded-climbing torque.
