The Aventure M is the Aventure platform with the a100 mid-drive, and it is the version worth paying for if you actually climb.
The 8.8 comes mostly from the motor and range criteria. Putting 100 Nm through the drivetrain rather than the rear hub transforms a loaded fat bike on a gradient, and the 85-mile claim from the same 733Wh pack the hub bikes use is the clearest evidence of how much more efficient the mid-drive is. SRAM DB4 brakes and a Cues 10-speed are appropriate to the price. It stays under 9 because mid-drives transfer their wear to the chain and cassette, and because 73 lbs is still 73 lbs.
Worth the $900 premium over the Aventure 3 if your rides involve sustained climbing. Not worth it for flat bike paths.
