Hitch rack for e-bikes

E-bikes are heavy. Use a rack rated for your bike's weight, ideally with a low loading height or a ramp.

Most roof racks aren't made for a 50 to 80 lb e-bike, so hitch racks are the usual choice. Check the per-bike weight limit against your bike, the wheelbase and tire width the trays accept, and your hitch receiver size (1.25 in or 2 in).

Take batteries off for the drive, protect the display, and recheck straps at every stop. Vacuum-mount racks can suit cars without a hitch, but check their weight limits carefully.

Pro tips from the e-bike pros

  • Remove the battery before loading: the bike is lighter and the pack stays safe.
  • Make sure your license plate and lights stay visible.
  • Practice loading at home before your first trip.
